Automatic summarization is the process of reducing a text document with a computer program in order to create a summary that retains the most important points of the original document. As the problem of information overload has grown, and as the quantity of data has increased, so has interest in automatic summarization. Technologies that can make a coherent summary take into account variables such as length, writing style and syntax. An example of the use of summarization technology is search engines such as Google. Document summarization is another.

Generally, there are two approaches to automatic summarization: extraction and abstraction. Extractive methods work by selecting a subset of existing words, phrases, or sentences in the original text to form the summary. In contrast, abstractive methods build an internal semantic representation and then use natural language generation techniques to create a summary that is closer to what a human might generate. Such a summary might contain words not explicitly present in the original. The state-of-the-art abstractive methods are still quite weak, so most research has focused on extractive methods.

Facebook acquires Threadsy, the company behind social graph analytics tool Swaylo:
Today, Threadsy, the company behind social analytics tool Swaylo, has announced that it has been acquired by Facebook.
The company has raised $6.3M to date, and no price has been mentioned for the acquisition. We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment. Users who have SwayloPro accounts will not be affected, as it will be treated as a separate company. Regular users will be out of luck once the deal goes through.
Here’s what Threadsy’s CEO, Rob Goldman, had to say on its blog:

Swaylo offers you the opportunity to see what kind and how much attention you’re getting for the things you post, share, and like on social media networks. Through an analysis of your social graph, Swaylo reflects your Sway – the impact your online activities have in your social circle and across the social graph.
Today we’re announcing that Threadsy will be acquired by Facebook. Threadsy is the company that operates Swaylo.com, provides people with their Sway score, and helps businesses, organizations and brands connect with their social influencers.
This is incredibly exciting for us! We built Swaylo because we believe Facebook and other social media services are the digital representation of our lives. There is no better opportunity to take Swaylo’s vision to the next level than at Facebook.

The service allows you to log into your Facebook account and view a dashboard that includes all of your social interactions. This could mean that Facebook is planning something similar for its users. Of course, this would also be useful for brands who run pages on the social network as well.
Goldman went on to detail what will happen to its users and to thank Threadsy’s investors:

Once the deal is done, people will no longer be able to access their Sway scores on Swaylo.com. But SwayloPro will continue to operate as separate, independent company owned by its current investors. SwalyoPro helps businesses connect with influential people on social media – here’s where you can find more info.
I’d like to extend a huge thank you to our investors John Johnston from August Capital and Amy Errett from Maveron Capital. They believed in us early and provided the guidance, support and capital needed to make Swaylo a reality.
Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who had a hand in this phase of Swaylo’s growth, especially our small but mighty and talented team. I’d like to extend a special thank you to my Co-Founder and CTO, Udi Nir, and our Chief Revenue and Strategy Officer, Sabrina Riddle for their leadership, vision, and contributions to Swaylo’s success.
Sincerely,

Rob Goldman
Swaylo also gives you a good idea of who influences you on Facebook as well, information that is valuable to users, brands…and Facebook itself.
Threadsy started out as a way to bring your Twitter and Facebook streams together, but pushed its focus on Facebook full-time. That seems to have paid off, literally.
UPDATE: Facebook has confirmed the acquisition of Threadsy with no other details.
The social update scheduling service Buffer became the first company to release an app onto Apple’s iOS App Store supporting the new real-time communication platform App.net. The notice was posted on the service by App.net founder Dalton Caldwell.
Buffer recently announced that it was supporting App.net on the service, which we covered last week. The addition of it to the iOS app in an update that’s live now marks the first appearance of App.net in Apple’s official store. Since there are easily a dozen iOS apps that are in beta or Alpha stages right now, many of which I’m playing with, I don’t doubt that it’s just the first of many.

Yesterday, Buffer’s Leo Widrich posted about the integration, and why Buffer chose to support App.net from ‘day one’ of its Alpha launch.

For us, the answer is very clear. Our goal with Buffer is to build tools that make it easier and smarter to use any social platform. We have done this with Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. And now, we do the same with App.net. Dalton and his team have an incredible focus and truly embraced and actively supported us as app developers right from the start. That is something we wanted to be part of and they continue to iterate incredibly fast.

We are extremely friendly with Twitter, App.net, and any other social platforms we support. All we want is to help expand the usability of these platforms with innovation built on top of them.

He also notes that, since IFTTT also has a Buffer channel, this makes the social glue service compatible with App.net also.

Instagram is enjoying the biggest week in its existence. The company, already riding high on its iOS success, launched its Android app and captured 1 million downloads in its first day and unless you live under a rock, you will know that yesterday, Facebook came in and bought the company for a cool $1 billion.
Whilst everyone digests yesterday’s news, Instagram has just hit another impressive milestone — 5 million Android downloads in six days — making it one of the biggest Android app launches of all time. In fact, the iOS version of the app took about six months to reach 5 million users, on Android it took just six days.
Android users had been waiting a long time for the photo-sharing app to launch on the platform, and when even when the company launched its pre-registration process, smartphone owners rushed to be a part of it. When it opened pre-registration for its Android variant on March 24, it attracted 430,000 pre-registration signups in the following days.
Soon after launching on Google Play, Instagram was seeing 2,000 sign-ups a minute. The impact this had can be seen on the download graph below, which dipped shortly after launch as the initial demand subsided.
Today’s milestone is shown on Instagram’s Google Play page, which now registers downloads between 5 million and 10 million:

We put the app through its paces to see how the Android flavor compared against the one that iPhone users have grown to know and love. We found that much of the aesthetic had been ported over from iOS, with just a few concessions to Android user interface conventions.
The news will be of equal importance to Facebook, which is seeking to push ahead with its mobile offerings, as it decides just how it will incorporate the service into its social network. For now, Instagram will operate as it always has but its a question of when, not if, the company will start to make changes.
Adding LinkedIn’s social features to your company website is a great way to tap into both a large-scale recruitment platform and a targeted network of business contacts. Don’t believe it? Well, according to a study conducted by Bullhorn, a web-based software and services firm, LinkedIn is the leading social network for job recruiting.
Another study conducted by HubSpot, an inbound marketing company, showed that LinkedIn is 277% more effective at generating leads than Facebook and Twitter. These stats highlight how increasing the integration of LinkedIn on your website can help improve the success of your business.
If you’re ready to get started, here are nine key plugins and examples.

1. Share Button

The Share button should be placed on your site next to white papers, technical product guides, articles, throughout your blog, and on any other page that features content of a professional or business nature. This allows your site visitors to click the button and share the related content via LinkedIn.
Also, because LinkedIn’s audience is business-centric, the LinkedIn Share button should be used much more sparingly than, say, the Facebook Like button. For instance, placing a Share button on a product page for jeans would not be relevant to the average LinkedIn user, but placing a Share button on an article about the impact of jean sales on your industry would make sense. A natural place to install a Share button is a company’s blog.

2. Recommend Button

Using the Recommend button on your website lets visitors recommend your company’s products or services on LinkedIn. The Recommend button can also be used in the product and services sections of your LinkedIn company page. Keep in mind that this plugin isn’t right for every type of product or service page. Ask yourself if what you plan to add the Recommend button to is something that has a business-to-business use and is relevant to the LinkedIn audience.
A good example of a company using the Recommend button well is Intel. In this case, Intel used its LinkedIn company page to feature products with high recommendations. By putting a Recommend button beside a product on LinkedIn, and linking it back to the product page on Intel’s website, Intel can use LinkedIn to generate even more recommendations.

3. Follow Company Button

The Follow Company button give companies a way to grow their LinkedIn company page directly from their website. Once a user is following your company on LinkedIn, they can see your status updates in their LinkedIn news feed, which can help you regularly engage them and develop leads for your business.
The Follow Company button comes in two variations and is most effective when used on the homepage, blog, and contact page of your website. Some companies have also used the button in the header and footer of their site as a constant reminder to visitors to join them on LinkedIn.

4. Company Profile

The Company Profile plugin is essentially a virtual business card, but for your whole company. As you can see from Mashable’s Company Profile above, the plugin features your company logo, a Follow button, a summary of the company, and the number of employees at the company who are on LinkedIn.
There are three ways to display a Company Profile. The above is the most extensive because it includes the Follow button, giving web visitors the opportunity to follow your company on LinkedIn. The other two options simply feature the LinkedIn logo until you either click or hover over it for more info.
You can place this plugin on your homepage, except for the largest version, which should be featured lower on the page. The smaller versions of the plugin can be added wherever you list other social networks on your homepage. Lastly, placing the Company Profile on the about, contact, or careers page of your website is a good idea.

5. Company Insider

The Company Insider plugin allows you to highlight your company’s employees, which helps to give a human face to your business. This plugin can be customized for visitors to your website in three different ways: It can highlight the current employees of a company that are in your LinkedIn network, new hires to the company, and promotions and changes within your employee structure. The most ideal place to use this plugin is on your company’s careers page, much like the MSLGROUP example above.
This feature helps job seekers get a sense of your company’s growth, see how quickly current employees move up the career ladder, and most importantly, see any employees who are in their LinkedIn network. You also have the option to hide any of the three features of this plugin, although it’s recommended that you show them all.

6. Member Profile

The Member Profile plugin serves as your business card on LinkedIn. The example above is how the regular Member Profile plugin would display on your website. There is also a Full Member Profile plugin, which is similar, except that it allows for a much more extensive view of your profile. This plugin is most commonly found on personal blogs and on the websites of smaller start-ups. That’s because most companies elect to add LinkedIn plugins that highlight the organization as a whole, as opposed to one individual.

7. Apply Button

The Apply button allows applicants to quickly and easily apply for a job directly on your website with their LinkedIn profile. You can choose to customize this feature with your company logo, color choice, and three custom “yes or no” questions. With more coding, this feature can also be integrated into an existing applicant tracking system like Jobvite.
This plugin is beneficial for job applicants because all that is necessary for them to apply to a position is an updated LinkedIn profile. It’s a beneficial addition to your company’s recruitment efforts because it quickly allows you to see an applicant’s referrals, recommendations, and network of related contacts. It’s best utilized when placed on your website’s career page.

8. Sign In With LinkedIn

The Sign In with LinkedIn function allows people to sign in or register with your site using their LinkedIn credentials. This is a particularly beneficial addition for your customers because it allows them to quickly identify themselves when they attempt to leave a comment on your blog or forum. Your company also benefits because it receives insightful information from the people who register. This knowledge can be used to make more informed decisions concerning the ebb and flow of web traffic, for example.
Really, any website that requires visitors to register or sign in can benefit from Sign In with LinkedIn. Career-oriented websites can really gain the most from this functionality, which is exactly what visualize.me, shown above, does with their resume visualizer.

9. Jobs You May Be Interested In

The Jobs You May Be Interested In plugin helps job seekers by showing them only the jobs your company has posted on LinkedIn that relate to their experience and expertise. The best placement for this plugin would be on the careers or jobs section of your website. However, this plugin is only relevant if you’ve paid to have jobs listed on LinkedIn. Above are the job listings most relevant to me at American Express when I’m logged into LinkedIn. If you were to view this plugin live, and be logged into LinkedIn, the results would be specific to your LinkedIn profile.
This plugin also allows a company to show all jobs from multiple companies that are relevant to a LinkedIn user’s experience. This particular function is mostly for job listing websites because it’s highly unlikely your company would want to highlight job openings at other companies.
He discussed rolling back tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and cutting the budget to reduce the deficit. “We have a long-term problem with Medicare and Medicaid,” Obama noted, stating that “20% of the patients account for 80% of the cost” of most hospitals.

Most of the time though, Obama addressed questions from the audience, as well as user-submitted questions collected via the web. During this line of questioning, Obama addressed the housing crisis, clean energy research, immigration policy, Medicare and education reform.

Many of the questions came from Facebook employees. One asked Obama about a recent budget proposal from Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. The employee asked Obama if his budget plan was bold enough. “The Republican budget put forward is fairly radical,” Obama responded. “I wouldn’t call it particuarly courageous,” he added, before continuing with criticism of the viability of Ryan’s plan.

Another question focused on how the government would slow the rise of health care costs. Obama said the government should provide incentives to invest in new IT technology that would reduce costs.

At the end of the town hall meeting, Zuckerberg, who was uncharacteristically wearing a suit coat and tie, presented Obama with a uniform he’s more familiar with: a Facebook hoodie.

Here are photos from Obama’s visit to Facebook headquarters:

Protesters Outside I expect it’ll be a bit of everything, seasoned with a large dose of grumpy curmudgeon.” Call us psychic, but we’re willing to bet Gosling will be working on the Android platform.

Gosling developed Java while he was an employee at Sun Microsystems. The project began in 1991, and the language was released in 1995.

But when Sun was acquired by Oracle in a deal that closed in January 2010, Gosling left the company a few months later. At the time, he said, “Just about anything I could say [about Oracle] that would be accurate and honest would do more harm than good.” He’s since been notably cynical about Oracle’s treatment of the Java language and community, even going so far as to call Oracle CEO Larry Ellison “Larry, Prince of Darkness.”

Gosling said he had turned down several “excellent” opportunities prior to signing with Google. He wrote that the new job, whatever it may entail from day to day, “looks like interesting fun with huge leverage.”

source: Mashable
Ahmed Elmorsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02216789444900028239noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1386825893791143183.post-18182718022656783622011-03-07T16:14:00.001+02:002011-03-07T16:14:38.667+02:00Firefox 4 also crashing due to outdated graphics drivers
Firefox 4 also crashing due to outdated graphics drivers: "After reading a new post from Mozilla, it appears as though Google isn't the only browser maker having a hard time with outdated graphics drivers. As Mozilla inches closer and closer to the final release of Firefox 4 -- which, of course, packs hardware accelerated rendering kung fu -- the company's Benoit Jacob has posted a plea to its users.

Please update your graphics drivers.

Like Google, Mozilla has noticed higher volumes of crash reports from Firefox 4 users who were running stale drivers. In addition to offering a general reminder to update your drivers, Mozilla has also posted a listing of the video card drivers which have been added to the Firefox 4 blocklist. If your driver is listed, it's imperative you update if you want to get the best performance out of Firefox 4.
Perhaps your customers are reporting that your site needs a mobile version so that they can visit it while they’re on the go, or maybe you recently saw a competitor’s site through your mobile device; it looked slick, and now you’re feeling outclassed.

The mobile web is burgeoning. Usage of iOS, the operating system for Apple mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad, almost doubled in just seven months (from March 2010 to October 2010), according to Netmarketshare. This is an indicator of just how many people are browsing websites, more and more, through their mobile devices instead of their computers.

Small businesses should be on top of this trend. To help out, we’ve compiled a list of easy-to-use tools for creating mobile sites. The tools in this list were purposely chosen for ease of use — that is, they’re all aimed at site owners who don’t have any web development/coding experience. They’re perfect solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses because of their cost effectiveness (and most are even free).

How These Tools Work

Most of the tools below have graphical user interfaces and copy-and-paste code blocks that can be installed on your site quite easily. If you can install a tool like Google Analytics on your site yourself, you’ll be able to use these tools.

These tools work by detecting the user agent of your site visitors, which is just fancy talk for finding out whether a visitor is using a regular web browser or a mobile web browser. If the user agent is a mobile browser, users are redirected to your website’s mobile version. The common practice is to assign the mobile version of your site with a sub-domain as such m.yourwebsite.com. In this manner, your site traffic is forked into two segments, giving all of your site visitors an optimal browsing experience.

1. Mobify

Mobify allows you to create a mobile version of your website through an intuitive and user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). Setup is a breeze, and you can have your very own mobile site in minutes.

If you run an e-commerce store, even better! Mobify has the Mobile Commerce platform that’s geared specifically toward e-stores for the mobile web.

Mobify runs on a freemium model, but its free version is very generous and includes the option for a custom domain (such as m.yourwebsite.com). The paid plans start at $249 per month and include features such as the removal of the Mobify logo on your mobile site, mobile analytics for reporting site traffic stats, and so on.

2. Wirenode

Companies such as Ford, Nokia and Reebok use Wirenode, a mobile website generator that has helped more than 50,000 websites create mobile-device-friendly versions of their sites.

Its free plan has a user-friendly editor for designing your mobile site, free hosting for up to three mobile sites, website statistics reporting, and more. The paid plans start at 15 Euros per month (about $19.80 USD), with upgrades such as support for custom domains and the removal of Wirenode advertisements.

3. Mippin Mobilizer

If you’re strapped for time, Mippin Mobilizer is a no-frills tool that will take you minutes to use. All you have to do is enter your site’s RSS feed URL, configure some options, sign up for an account, install some code on your site, and you’re done! As you set up your mobile site, it has a live preview on the right-hand-side so that you can see the progression of your site’s design as you configure it.

4. Onbile

Onbile promises that you can have a mobile version of your site in five minutes or less. It delivers this promise by giving you an intuitive user interface for constructing your mobile site and a custom-generated script to paste into your index page so that when mobile device users visit your site, they are redirected to the mobile version. You can select one of 13 customizable templates as a starting point for your mobile site design.

5. Winksite

If you’re interested in creating an online community based around your mobile site, check out Winksite, a web app for building a mobile community for your website.

It even generates your very own QR code, a two-dimensional code readable by mobile devices with QR scanners and used to automatically pull up text, photos, videos, music and URLs. There are many ways to use QR codes for small business marketing. You can print your QR code on your business card, print ads and other branding materials, and when mobile users want to visit your mobile site, they just need to use their mobile device cameras to scan the QR code.

If you would like to generate a QR code without having to use Winksite, check out this free web-based tool called QR-Code Generator.

6. MobilePress

Do you use the WordPress publishing platform for your website? If so, you’re in luck because there’s a bevy of plug-and-play WordPress plugins for automatically generating a mobile version of your website. One such plugin is MobilePress, a free WordPress plugin for creating a mobile theme for your WordPress-powered site. Another WordPress plugin to consider is WordPress Mobile Edition.

7. iWebKit

iWebKit is a simple framework for creating your own iPhone/iPod touch apps. It can be used to create an app like Mashable’s iPhone app, for example.

Though iWebKit can be used by anyone, even without knowledge of HTML, it isn’t as user-friendly as the other tools mentioned above and requires that you download and install the app as well as read the user manual. But for a small time investment (no cash needed, the iWebKit framework is free), you can have your very own iPhone app just like the big kids.

8. MoFuse

MoFuse is loaded with a large set of features for building and managing your mobile site. It’s aimed at agencies, news media, and small- and medium-sized businesses. Prices range from $7.95 to $199 per month and include features such as site analytics reporting, support for more than 5,000 different mobile devices, customer support, a QR code manager, and more.

Bonus: Resources for Testing and Evaluation

Once you use one of the tools above and have your very own mobile version of your main site, it’s a good practice to ensure that everything’s in order. Here are additional tools and resources for testing and evaluating your new mobile website.

mobiReady – This tool will test your site for dotMobi compliance and W3C mobileOK compliance, sets of mobile website standards that ensure an optimal and accessible mobile-site user experience. If the developer sending the e-mail is hip to Hotmail’s changes, you’ll be able to take actions from within the e-mail itself without having to navigate to a slew of other web pages. Basically, the new Hotmail e-mails will look, feel and behave like a web page running within an e-mail.

It’s a cool update, and it also has the potential to keep Hotmail more competitive with Google’s Gmail, which offers users previews of content from Flickr and YouTube within e-mails.

The problem with running JavaScript in e-mails, of course, is security: How can Hotmail protect users from malicious code? Windows Live Active Views is a product aimed at answering this question.

While we’d love to know more about what exactly Active Views is and how it does what it does, all Microsoft has told us so far is that Active Views uses “technology that allows senders to run code securely in their email messages.” That’s a pretty vague statement about a pretty cool feature; we’ll let you know when we learn more.

Orbitz and Monster.com will be the first two companies to use the new interactive e-mail platform from Hotmail, with LinkedIn and Netflix jumping on the bandwagon soon. Here’s a quick demo of the product:

Ahmed Elmorsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02216789444900028239noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1386825893791143183.post-76801142191564454402010-12-12T09:33:00.001+02:002010-12-12T09:34:27.624+02:0010 Chrome Web Apps to Check Out

The Google Chrome Web Store has only been open for a few hours, and already hundreds of apps are available to use.

To be fair, not every app offers a new experience; some are merely bookmarks to existing web apps. There are already a number of apps, however, that really push the boundaries of what we expect from a web app, offering new, optimized experiences and tight browser integration.

The great thing about web apps is that you don’t necessarily have to use Google Chrome to benefit from these great interfaces. Some of the apps do use Chrome-specific optimizations, but most will work identically in Safari or Firefox 4 beta.

Here are 10 Chrome web apps that we think are worth exploring:

SlideRocket

<img style="border: medium none;" title="SlideRocket" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/sliderocket-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: SlideRocket is a fantastic web app that lets you create robust, media-rich presentations in your web browser. SlideRocket even has a new HTML5 slide viewer optimized for the iPad.

What makes the Chrome app extra cool is that SlideRocket lets you sign in with your Google or Google Apps account instantly. Plus, the Google connection means that the app can now easily integrate with your Google address book (perfect for sharing a presentation or adding collaborators) and you can access real-time Google feeds to integrate into your slide deck.

Sports Illustrated Snapshot

<img style="border: medium none;" title="Sports Illustrated Snapshot" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/si-snapshot-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: The Sports Illustrated Snapshot app really showcases just how jaw-dropping high-speed sports photography can be. Every day, new photos are hand-picked and captioned and added to the various channels in the app. Plus, users can purchase access to curated images from the archives or from big events like the Super Bowl.

We love the way the app flows; it would look at home on a tablet.

Crackle

<img style="border: medium none;" title="Crackle" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/crackle-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: Sony's Crackle.com web video service offers a great blend of original series, movies, TV shows and shorts. The Crackle Google Chrome app is keyboard friendly and easy to browse, and it offers a really robust lean-back experience. We could easily see this app on a Chrome-enabled set-top box.

Springpad

<img style="border: medium none;" title="Springpad" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/springpad-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: Springpad is kind of like a mashup between Evernote and Zootool. You can capture information from various sources for your own personal notebooks, set reminders that can then be tweeted to you and create information or organize data around your Facebook contacts.

The Springpad Chrome app really becomes cool when you use it with the Springpad Chrome extension. Capturing, collating and referencing your information is a snap.

HuffingtonPost NewsGlide

<img style="border: medium none;" title="HuffingtonPost NewsGlide" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/huff-po-google-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: If we were the Huffington Post, we would make the NewsGlide Chrome app our iPad app. It flows well, pulls up content in an attractive way and is easy to navigate.

Clicker.TV

<img style="border: medium none;" title="Clicker.TV" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/clicker-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: Clicker's Chrome app is actually optimized for remote controls or keyboards. That makes it a really hot addition to a home media PC. You can easily navigate without using a mouse, search for content and play back your favorite shows from the available sources without missing a beat.

A netbook running Clicker hooked up to an HDTV would kind of be like what Google TV was supposed to be.

TweetDeck

<img style="border: medium none;" title="TweetDeck" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/tweetdeck-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: TweetDeck has been promising to take an HTML5 approach to its web and mobile apps for quite some time. The Chrome app brings that plan to fruition. Not only can you log in with your existing TweetDeck account, you can also import information from the TweetDeck Air app.

The Chrome app might not replace TweetDeck for diehard users, but think about this: This is portable. Now, if you're on someone else's computer, you can access your TweetDeck columns from within Chrome. Snazzy.

Graphic.ly

<img style="border: medium none;" title="Graphic.ly" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/graphicly-chrome.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: Graphic.ly has apps for Adobe Air, Windows 7, iOS and Windows Phone 7 already, but the Chrome web app brings the comic viewing, purchasing and sharing experience to the browser.

Graphic.ly has lots of deals with some of the top comic book publishers to deliver comics that can be read and synced across your devices. You can also download free comics and comic previews. The Chrome app integrates with the other apps and lets you take advantage of the special Graphic.ly Flow view.

MOG

<img style="border: medium none;" title="MOG" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/mog-chrome-app.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: We already discussed the MOG app, but we wanted to give it another shout-out for creating an entirely new interface for Chrome or Safari users.

New York Times

<img style="border: medium none;" title="New York Times" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/chrome-web-apps/nytimes-chrome-app.jpg" width="400" />

Why It's Awesome: Frankly, we wish all newspaper websites looked this good. With keyboard shortcuts, layout choices and support for multi-touch, the New York Times app really manages to create a fantastic web app experience that helps you forget you're in a web browser.

source: http://on.mash.to/dGuXvc

Ahmed Elmorsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02216789444900028239noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1386825893791143183.post-82290372434551313762010-11-22T20:04:00.001+02:002010-11-22T20:05:04.224+02:00A bridge to the cloud: Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office now available to early testersTens of millions of people have moved to Google Docs because it’s 100% web: it provides real-time collaboration in the browser, with no software to install, manage or upgrade. Of course, we know that many more of you still use Microsoft Office, because until recently, there weren’t many tools to help you collaborate and share with others. Now there’s more choice.

To help smooth the transition from Office to the cloud, my teammates and I founded a company called DocVerse, which was acquired by Google earlier this year. Over the last 9 months, we’ve been hard at work moving the DocVerse product to Google’s infrastructure. We’ve also renamed it Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office. Today, we’re pleased to take the next step towards a public launch and make it available to early testers.

For those of you who have not made the full move to Google Docs and are still using Microsoft Office, Google has something great to offer. With Cloud Connect, people can continue to use the familiar Office interface, while reaping many of the benefits of web-based collaboration that Google Docs users already enjoy.

Users of Office 2003, 2007 and 2010 can sync their Office documents to the Google cloud, without ever leaving Office. Once synced, documents are backed-up, given a unique URL, and can be accessed from anywhere (including mobile devices) at any time through Google Docs. And because the files are stored in the cloud, people always have access to the current version.

Once in the Google cloud, documents can be easily shared and even simultaneously edited by multiple people, from right within Office. A full revision history is kept as the files are edited, and users can revert to earlier versions in one click. These are all features that Google Docs users already enjoy today, and now we’re bringing them to Microsoft Office.

All you need is a Google account, and you’re ready to go. That’s it!

If you’re a Google Apps for Business customer interested in joining our preview program, please sign up here. If you’re not, don’t worry- at launch, Google Cloud Connect will be available free to everyone, including consumers.

Posted by Shan Sinha, Group Product Manager on Google Docs Blog

Ahmed Elmorsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02216789444900028239noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1386825893791143183.post-67285126454878047882010-11-21T13:35:00.001+02:002010-11-21T13:35:58.964+02:00Oracle Announces Release Date for Java 7 Today, Oracle announced that the Java Development Kit (JDK) 7 will be generally available on July 28, 2011. Yesterday, the company submitted the specs for Java 7 and 8 to the Java Community Process Executive Committee for approval. According to Java Chief architect Mark Reinhold's blog, the 'results should be available in two weeks.' However, as we reported recently, the Apache Software Foundation is threatening to vote against the approval of Java 7.

According to the submission materials, here's what Oracle intends to improve upon in the Java 7:

Continually improving the productivity of Java developers is critical to keeping the Java SE platform at the forefront of software development.

Exploiting the opportunities of multicore CPUs in a way that is safe and practical for developers is essential for all Java applications.

With the advent of new programming languages on the JVM it is important for the JVM to reflect the needs of language implementors, and that the Java language be able to interoperate with those languages.

In order to provide a competitive user experience Java applications sometimes need the ability to access and manipulate, in a controlled and testable fashion, the native semantics of the file system of the underlying platform.

And, also from submission materials, here's what it intends to improve in Java 8:

Exploiting the opportunities of multi-core CPUs in a way that is safe and practical for programmers is essential for all Java applications.

Modularity is a fundamental building block for developing, deploying, managing, and evolving all Java applications. Existing frameworks and tools support these tasks today, but standardization in the Java SE Platform would promote interoperability and benefit developers, users, and vendors.

Source: http://rww.to/djleRi

Ahmed Elmorsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02216789444900028239noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1386825893791143183.post-14883142619125693552010-11-21T13:17:00.001+02:002010-11-21T13:17:27.096+02:00Happy 25th Anniversary, Microsoft Windows

It was 25 years ago today that Microsoft released Windows 1.0. The world’s most popular operating system has gone through a number of versions since then, and the next iteration, Windows 8, is expected within 2 years.

At the time it launched, Windows actually wasn’t a full operating system. Rather, it was a graphical user interface (GUI) that ran on top of DOS. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said at launch that Windows 1.0, which carried a suggested retail price of $99 in 1985, was “unique software” that would provide “unprecedented power to users today and a foundation for hardware and software advancements of the next few years.” (You can read the full, 32-page Windows 1.0 press kit at this link.)

While that uniqueness has long been up for debate, it is certainly easy to argue that Gates was right about Windows laying a foundation for the future of the personal computer. Windows has been the dominant operating system for the past two decades. Its future as such, however, is in doubt. Computing seems to be undergoing a fundamental shift away from the PC paradigm and toward mobile and tablet-based interfaces.

The graphic below, from ZDNet UK, illustrates the progression of Windows from November 20, 1985 to today.

The following image is a screenshot of Windows 1.0, which sat on top of Microsoft’s command-line operating system, MS-DOS.

Source: http://on.mash.to/bixJN1Ahmed Elmorsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02216789444900028239noreply@blogger.com0
